Dr. Benjamin Hobbs + Dr. Hobbs is a Professor in the Geography & Environmental Engineering Department and a Joint Professor in the Mathematical Sciences Department at Johns Hopkins University. His research activities involve the development and application of systems analysis and economics methods to analyze energy, water, and environmental problems. The particular tools that he applies include optimization, decision analysis, and benefit-cost analysis. Recently, Dr. Hobbs and his students have created optimization-based methods to compare small, decentralized generation and energy conservation options with traditional power supplies, and to simulate imperfectly competitive power markets. Dr. Hobbs’ recent applications of benefit-cost analysis include simulation of deregulated power markets and assessment of the benefits of remediating acid mine drainage in western Maryland. He holds a Ph.D. in environmental systems engineering from Cornell University.
