he / him

Rob Swain is a Consultant at E3, where his work applies economic modeling and forecasting to better understand market behavior, infrastructure risk, and long-term planning challenges in the power sector. Before joining E3, Rob worked for several years as a data and national security analyst, where he focused on quantitative modeling, scenario development, and decision support for complex systems. In this role, he developed analytical tools to evaluate uncertainty and risk and helped inform investment strategy and policy decisions across energy and national security domains.

Rob joined E3 to apply his analytical background to the energy space, which he believes to be the most complex and consequential problem of our time. His doctoral research on nanomaterials for photovoltaic applications gave him an early window into the technical frontiers of clean energy, and that experience left him convinced that the energy sector represents the defining challenge of our era. Today, he is particularly drawn to questions of resilience and long-term planning, specifically how grid infrastructure can be designed and managed to withstand increasingly volatile demand growth and an uncertain future.

Outside of work, Rob enjoys playing trivia, board games, and banjo, as well as reading and exploring the West Coast after a recent move from Washington, DC.

Education: PhD, Materials Chemistry, Université de Toulouse; MS, Applied Mathematics, Johns Hopkins University; MA, Applied Economics, Georgetown University; BA, Mathematics and Chemistry, Columbia University.
