Jens Schoene is a Director at E3 with more than 20 years of experience in power system engineering, grid modernization, and distribution planning. He focuses on advanced power system modeling to evaluate the effectiveness of emerging grid technologies, including DER integration and sensor deployment strategies. Building on this foundation, he supports the implementation of grid modernization initiatives across the full solution lifecycle—from use case development and requirements definition to vendor selection, followed by system design and deployment.

Before joining E3, Jens served as the Director of Research Studies at EnerNex, where he supported large-scale grid modernization efforts and the integration of renewable energy resources for utilities, government agencies, and private sector clients. His work included the development and evaluation of advanced grid management tools, forecasting and optimization capabilities, and planning approaches to address increasingly complex system operations. Over the course of his career, Jens has addressed a wide range of power system challenges, including renewable integration, transmission and distribution planning, and system protection and reliability. His earlier research focused on understanding and mitigating the impacts of lightning and other electrical hazards on power systems and infrastructure. Jens has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed and industry publications and is an active leader within the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), including serving as Chair of the Task Force on Distribution System State Estimation.

Jens is motivated by solving complex, real-world challenges that have a tangible impact on the electric grid. He values the opportunity to work closely with utilities to understand their most pressing issues and translate them into focused, research-driven questions. In particular, he driven by turning those insights into actionable, cost-effective strategies that enhance grid reliability, enable efficient integration of renewable energy, and support a more flexible, sustainable, and low-carbon energy future.

Outside of work, Jens enjoys beach volleyball, tennis, kitesurfing, skiing, and spending time with his wife and son, who is also an electrical engineer.

Education: PhD and MS, Electrical Engineering, University of Florida; Diplom-Ingenieur, Electrical Engineering, University of Paderborn, Germany
