Otto Schmidt’s work focuses on wholesale electricity market pricing and forecasting, transmission planning, and energy risk analysis. At E3, he applies this background in market forecasting and energy systems modeling to the pricing, transmission, and risk questions that come with a grid increasingly reliant on renewables, storage, and electrification. During his graduate studies at Dartmouth College, Otto advised several partner organizations on energy usage. His work included helping a golf course operator shift electric cart charging to avoid demand costs and advising coastal and island communities in Maine on energy resilience strategies. Earlier, as an intern at Consulting Engineers Group, he engineered battery energy storage systems and built a predictive tool for wholesale electricity prices in the CAISO and ERCOT markets. At St. Olaf College, Otto conducted research on snow albedo, consulted with faculty on statistical analysis across disciplines, and studied abroad in Ecuador, Jordan, Namibia, and Vietnam.
As a physicist, Otto is fascinated by how we move and transform energy and its fundamental nature in society. He is motivated to use this background to help businesses, governments, and organizations advance a clean, affordable, and reliable energy system.
Outside of work, Otto is an avid runner, biker, and Nordic skier who has guided backpacking and bikepacking trips across Europe, Canada, and the US. He also never turns down a game of cribbage, a trivia night, a crossword, or a Minnesota Twins game.
