Brian Mutua is a Consultant in E3’s Integrated System Planning practice, where he focuses on capacity expansion modeling and analyzing resource adequacy. He supports utilities, state agencies, and private sector clients in long-term planning, system reliability analysis and market assessment, combining technical modeling, strategic analysis, and policy insight to inform investment and planning decisions.
Before joining E3, Brian earned a Master of Environmental Management from Duke University, where he specialized in Energy, Environmental Analytics, and Modeling. His graduate research spanned energy system modeling and power market analysis, including evaluating the role of rooftop solar in mitigating load shedding in Cape Town and assessing the feasibility of solar-plus-storage as a mid-merit replacement for natural gas in ERCOT. Prior to graduate school, he spent six years working internationally in energy and infrastructure development, focusing on distributed solar projects for commercial and industrial clients. He also worked with international development organizations and private developers to advance clean energy deployment across emerging markets.
Brian is motivated by supporting the energy transition and equitable energy access through data-driven modeling. Outside of work, he enjoys hiking (Mt. Kilimanjaro remains his highest summit to date), listening to podcasts on business and global affairs, cooking, and learning to play the saxophone.
Education: M.E.M., Energy, Environmental Analytics, and Modeling, Duke University; B.S., Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology
