he / him

Nick Jansen specializes in electricity markets, market design, regulatory strategy, and transmission planning. Nick has built his career working across the key institutions and stakeholders of the Alberta electricity sector, developing expertise that spans economic analysis, regulatory strategy, and energy policy. As a Senior Economist at the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO), he led economic analysis on complex grid and market issues, developed technical white papers on transmission planning and grid operations, and supported market, tariff, and transmission-related regulatory proceedings. Before working at the AESO, Nick gained broad exposure to the Alberta market as an independent consultant and Senior Regulatory Advisor, advising electricity generators on regulatory strategy and economic analysis, drafting submissions to the Alberta Utilities Commission, Canada Energy Regulator, and FERC, and representing consumer interests at the Alberta Utilities Consumer Advocate. His engagement with Alberta energy policy has also extended into the political arena, having served as Vice-President of Policy and Expert on the Energy Subcommittee for the Alberta Liberal Party, where he introduced a motion in the Alberta Legislature to amend the regulation governing Alberta’s default electricity rate.

Nick is fascinated by the optimization of the electricity system. It is a complex puzzle that involves trying to maintain reliability while minimizing cost and meeting sustainability targets. This requires careful planning and well-designed markets, both of which rely on the rigorous economic analysis that Nick enjoys doing most.

Outside of work, Nick loves getting outdoors for mountain biking and trail running in the summer, and enjoys working out and gaming in the winter. He grew up in a small remote town in the Yukon, where he developed an early appreciation for the outdoors and the natural world.
